Working Christmas

As many of you know, Tuesday was Christmas! I was kinda bumming about working on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

They days weren't as bad as they could have been.
No major crises.
Surprisingly Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas were the crazy ones.
Working Christmas gave me some reasons to be thankful.

For example...
Some of my patients did not have family that could come and see them.
They were also bummed about not being able to get out of bed.
They were in pain, from open abdominal wounds covered by wound vacs,
from knee replacements, hip replacements, and amputations.

Thanksgiving may be over, but Christmas reminds me of the things that I give thanks for as well.
I am thankful for the health of my family and friends despite me not being able to spend the special time of year with them
I also am thankful to have a job.

I also missed my family today and wished I could have been with them, instead of taking care of other people's families.

I wished I could have eaten a home-cooked dinner, instead of cafeteria food at work. I don't think that makes me a bad person.

Thank you to my husband, who stayed with me despite the choice to be with family members. He always waits up for me after work and makes me feel safe and warm.

I'm sorry that his Christmas plans were very untraditional...home alone...waiting for his wife to get home.

But I truly believe in how important it is to be thankful even the crappy circumstances. I am thankful.
I am hoping next Christmas will feel better for me. I am hoping I won't have to work both Christmas and Christmas Eve and I will decorate and make my home feel like home. It has been hard being between two houses in a holiday season.

I will admit that when I go to work every day, I am terrified that I will encounter something I can't handle: a situation that requires medical knowledge I haven't learned

Or an experience that I don't have (which happened yesterday...more to come later). Family is a good distraction from that. I am very thankful for the time I get with my family and know that they will always be there for me.

Have any of you guys ever had an unconventional Christmas?

Tuesday Topics: One Christmas Photo

Kevin and I between the two houses and my crazy job, did not send out a Christmas card this year. My mom put us on hers and I think she did an amazing job! Me taking a picture of it though...not so hot. Did I mention I am moving? That would be why my internet and scanner are in boxes. I am posting this (late) off of Kevin's phone internet. I worked last night and I work again today. What a stinker!

I was able to spend this weekend with mine and Kevin's family. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I finally got the hang of it! :-)

I probably will be lying low on the blog this week due to the lack of internet, working all week, and moving but I wish all of you the Merriest of Christmases today!

Oh and Tiffany and I will be announcing another 10 day Tuesday Topics soon, so stay tuned and thank you to everyone who links up! It is so much fun!!

Okay how about a picture already!?!

Splitting Holidays

Holiday time married. This is my first holiday season married. It can be stressful. Between the demands of both sets of parents and the desire to start new holiday traditions as a couple, it is hard to divide your time and keep everyone happy. In fact, figuring it all out can divide even you two. Somehow it is different then when we were dating all those years.

Since you can’t be in two places at once, try some of these ideas. And remember that your families should accept any decision you make. You and your husband are a family now and you do what you want.

Split the day in half. Go to his house Christmas Eve and yours Christmas day. Or his family's house in the morning on Christmas day and yours in the afternoon.

Split/Rotate holidays. If splitting days is too stressful or families are not in the same city, do Thanksgiving with his one year and yours the next. Same with Christmas! That allows you to really focus on the family and share every part of the holiday.

Invite people to you. Do your own holidays at your home and invite both sides over. Whomever wants to come is welcome to!

Celebrate on different days. If your families are willing to wait, do Christmas with your family on Christmas day and Christmas with his family the next day. Why not right?

How do you determine which family to spend time with during the holiday season?

Tuesday Topics: 7 Traditions

The holidays bring out the wonderful traditions that we share with our loved ones.
That is what I love most about this time of year!

Here are 7 of my favorite traditions:

Christmas Eve Apps:
My mom makes the most wonderful appetizers and makes all the favorites for Christmas Eve. There is so much that this serves as our dinner. Hot Spinach and Artichoke dip, Crabbies, and Hankie Pankies to name a few! We sit around the TV with them and watch a Christmas movie. Love! (This happens after Christmas Eve Mass and I love it!)

Christmas Light Looking
When I was a kid we had a family friend with two kids and my family and we would pile into a suburban and drive around looking at Christmas lights. So fun! We would end the night with dinner at a local Mexican place called Roberto's. So good! We have all moved and grown and stopped the tradition, but this year I still looked at Christmas lights (read the craziness here) with my family.

Real Christmas Trees
Here is a tradition that I will have to decide whether I continue or not. I have never had a fake Christmas tree. My mom has always got a real Christmas tree that is 10 feet tall with beautiful white lights and sparkly ornaments since I was little. It makes Christmas for me. I love my mom's trees. This year Kevin and I don't have a tree because we are between houses, but next year will we go fake (read easy) or real...we shall see.
My parent's tree with all the presents under it!

Christmas Picture
I love taking the Christmas picture, because it is the one time I am guaranteed a picture with my two hottie sistas. Plus I swear my mom invented the Christmas lie.
Circa we all look so young! Crazy!

Okay those are some of my favorite traditions around the holidays, but I can't leave out my other favorite traditions:

Friday Night Monster Movies
When I was little my dad and I would let me (and sometimes my sister) pick out a monster movie and we would watch one every Friday night. I am talking Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, The Invisable Man...a la Bela Lugosi. I loved that time with Dad.

For some reason Tess looks scared out of her mind and I look sad...

The Easter Egg Hunt
Yeah my mom and dad still send my sisters and I on an Easter egg hunt. I score a piece of chocolate per egg found and there is a large pink egg that is always hidden REALLY well with money inside of it. Fun fun!

Birthday Dinner
My family has never been the family to go out to dinner, so my mom makes birthdays special by letting us pick the menu of our favorite foods on our birthdays.

And I am at 7 already! What are some traditions you and your family has? I am sure in the coming years Kevin and I will create some of our own traditions as a family and I cannot wait. :-)

I'm Boring

I feel like my life is really boring right now because all I really do is work, sleep, and work on my new home. So really I just want to hear about all of the fun things you all are doing so i can live vicariously through you.

Here are some randoms about life right now.

I want to be moved into my house with everything done. It will be easier for me to get back into the groove of cooking (I hope).

Next year when I am more settled I will do all this exciting Christmas decorating you are all doing.

I am currently obsessed with this song.
and this song.
SO good.

I haven't completed Christmas shopping AT ALL.

Please tell me the fun things you are getting to do.
Listening to christmas music?
Decorating? Shopping? I want to know.

Grey's Anatomy Scrubs Review

Medical Scrubs Collection kindly offered to provide me a pair of Grey's Anatomy scrubs to review. After wearing the most awful, ill-fitting scrubs throughout nursing school, I have become awfully picky about what I wear to work.

Being picky has it's that you might not know what you are missing out on! I was skeptical about whether or not I would like these new Grey's Anatomy scrubs. I'm skeptical in general when it comes to new scrubs and especially when buying them without trying them on. Never in my life have I ordered scrubs without wearing them in the dressing room for at least ten twenty minutes trying to decide if I like them or not.

I had once gone to a scrub store and put my hands on the Grey's scrubs. I thought they were soft, but that convinced me not to try them on. Don't get me wrong, I love soft, but I was scared that they would have no structure to them and would make me look bigger than I really am.

I have trouble finding scrubs that fit correctly. These were no exception, but they did have pros that rocked my socks off!

First off the color is great and secondly the softness makes me truly amazing, but third:

I am constantly pulling up my scrub pants up while at work. I pull them up, tie them tighter, sit down and bend down and then repeat a trillion times a night. Not these! The soft and slightly stretchy material also made it much more comfortable to do some of the crazy positions that I can get myself into trying to deal with patients.

I had heard Grey's ran small and boy do they!!! I am so sorry about how the top looks on me. I couldn't post a total front shot, the girls were just all wrong.

So instead I was silly. (after a 13 hour shift)

I could go on and on about what all I liked about them.

No jokes. I truly criticize scrubs. And the one downfall is that they really do run small! I wear an XS in both pants and bottoms normally. Since I had heard Grey's runs small, I decided to get a size up. Boy it sure didn't work out too great! I really need XS pants and a M top!

Cause you can see how long the pants are on my short little 5'2" self!

I was selected for this opportunity, however all content and opinions expressed here are my own!

Tuesday Topics: 6 Instagram Photos

I love photos, but will be the first to admit that I am not at all a good photographer. I do have an instagram though if you would like to follow!

So my favorite picture that I have taken via instagram is this one:

If I am lucky this describes my normal work.

My husband was really sweet one day when he packed a lunch for me. This picture reminds me that the little things make the biggest impact.

Blogging has been such an amazing part of my life.

Learning to win Catan has been fun!

I feel like all of a sudden this should be a countdown like the 12 days of Christmas.

Weekend Update

Every time I write weekend update, I think of SNL. And yes my weekend was busy enough to where I still have the past two SNLs on there.

But busy is good!

Friday I was blessed with being called off from work. I think I really needed that. I was able to get some organizing done, go on a run, etc.

Then Friday night I became the worst blogger in history. Why you ask? I finally got myself all done up and really didn't take any pictures of it. I blame the fanciness of it and the open bar. We went to my Kevin's award ceremony! He was recognized for being a great young new employee. So proud of him!

Saturday my whole family came over to help us continue to improve on our house. I continued to paint with my mom. Boy that is a job! I promise when I feel like I am in one house and a little more settled I will do posts home improvement projects. :-)

Wanna hear a scary idyllic story gone wrong?

Well you have no choice. :-)
I told my whole family: mom, dad, two little sisters, and husband...Hey! Come on a walk with me around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights!

They said okay and most of them wish that they said no.

We walked and ooohhed and awwed over some of the beautiful lights on a clear beautiful Arizona night.

We stopped in front of this one house to look at seriously the biggest Christmas lights you have ever seen. Almost as big as my head strung to a tree. I still want to know where these people got them. Across the street was another beautifully decorated house. All of a sudden, my sister says: what is that? We look, we squint in the night and realize that it is a pack of Javelinas.

This is a Javelina:

And it's baby. Javelina are good to eat, have SUPER sharp teeth, and get very mean and aggressive. Especially when they have babies. This pack of 10 had 2 babies.

Yes we do live near the desert and this is a hazard, however the scary part came when the neighbor let his dog out. The dog went straight for them. Two things became a scary reality: one, the dog (who thankfully listened to his owner when he was told to come back) would have died; and two, the dog could have easily herded them towards us to which we would have been facing some angry Javelinas. (thankfully they ran the opposite way we ran)

We booked it to a hiding spot and were safe. We then immediately walked home. We figured out the next day that they were enjoying acorns from the person's Live Oak Tree.

Sunday we continued to work! Lot's of work!

Then my family left and Kevin and I settled in in front of the TV to watch SNL!
All and all a great weekend! What did you do?!

My First Code

Written approx 1 month ago...

All or most of you probably know by now that I am a nurse. I was inspired by my sister and just the random calling to be a nurse. This post is not the most glamorous post, so some of you may want to stop reading.

I am still a very new nurse. I graduated in December of 2011. I had test anxiety over the NCLEX, didn't study properly, and actually did not pass the first time I took it. I saved up my money, studied, and took it again and passed. Then I got married, moved to Tucson, and struggled to find a job. There is a job shortage out there for new nurses. Thankfully I found the job I am in now and I know it is where I need to be right now.

As a nursing student, I was lucky to have seen and performed a lot. More than many of my peers, actually. I started lots of IV's, I've put in an NG tube, I've been in the OR, I've seen several circumcisions, I've witnessed a baby's first breaths, I've removed stitches and staples, I've worked in psych units, I've pulled out and put in urinary catheters; I've administrated medications via all the routes, I've done a couple different dressing changes (sorry all you non-medical folks or people who have stopped reading because you are grossed out) and much more. The biggest thing for me when I was a nursing student though, was my first code.

I was in the ER and heard code blue over the intercom. It was in the ICU and they needed all the hands they could get. I ran over and helped out with compressions. I will sadly never forget the feeling of broken ribs under my hands. Thank God for adrenaline because it caused me not to stop and freak out. Thankfully since he was in the ICU it was what we call a controlled code and we had all the medications on hand and accessed IVs and sites to get things done quickly. I can't remember how many people were in the room, but there were so many all performing different tasks, working together, to save this man's life.

Despite our best efforts, we were not reviving him. His family was called and we were given the okay to let the patient go. Tired as heck, we all stopped and the patient passed away.

People have been in codes longer than me in this first code, but even a minute in "code time" seems like an eternity.

To this day, that has been my only full blown code that I have participated in. When I was in my first ever rotation in nursing school, I did have one of the best clinical advisers I had pull me aside to witness a death. This man was being pulled from life support. My clinical adviser stated she chose me to see it because she said I could handle it. I am glad she did and it gave me the purpose to continue and do what some other people cannot handle.

These two experiences also prepared me for my most recent experience. When you are in nursing school, you are not acting under your own licence. Now that I have my own, it was infinitely weirder to be called to call a time of death. I was the supervisor for the building a Saturday ago and was called to the Long Term Care side by an LPN who stated that her patient had passed away. Where I work, there are not always doctors present, so it falls to the Registered Nurse to assess the patient and call time of death. The silence in my stethoscope was eerie.

One thing I didn't have in nursing school: my first fall. No worries. I got a couple of those (and they are okay) and the paperwork to come with it...

Interview with PSY!

I did interview him!

In my dream a while ago...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but in my dream being an amazing blogger I was tasked with interviewing PSY for the blog! (PSY if you really want an interview, feel free to contact me!)

I am glad I remembered this dream. It was a great dream! Usually you only remember bad dreams...why is that?

I asked PSY about his views on America and naturally who he would vote for if he could in the last election. (Yeah this dream was the night before election) He did have an opinion and it was really interesting to hear it!

But I also had a creepy aspect to my dream. I swear I never looked him up (except on You Tube) and I magically knew how many albums he had from my dream (6 going on 7). I also new that he had 2 little girls. After my dream I looked him up on Wiki and found that was all correct information.

Crazy! Thanks for the interview dream PSY!

I also cannot confirm nor deny that I may be doing this for Christmas ;-)

And yeah the farmer boys strike again!!

Blogger Deleted my Post!

So fail

I had this awesome post of my five favorite recipes for you all. Worked really hard on it. Last night after work I went to post it from my phone (I had just downloaded the app) and then it posted a WAY old version of it. Like it totally reverted itself. I truly didn't understand. I went to sleep last night hoping that when I woke up this morning, it would be a bad dream, but it wasn't.

Has anything like this ever happened to you?

Well at least I have all of your amazing posts to read today! I am deleting the app now and never trying to post from it again.

Happy Tuesday!!

Weekend Update

So this weekend we celebrated Kevin's birthday since I worked all week and I continued to work! Haha...I lead such an exciting life.

We did some more updating on the house. I will devote posts to all of the exciting home improvement projects we are taking on!

Then I decided to take Kevin to dinner...little did he know, he had a group of his friends waiting for him.

And I got him a piece of the best cake you have ever tasted.

Then we went and saw a double header of Red Dawn and Breaking Dawn. Kevin had a fun first time doing his double header ;-)

We went on a hike! It was the perfect weather to be outside. Now I am starting to see why people like Arizona...

We had to make it short. I had to work that day. I am also a bad blogger and didn't get a picture. Dang!

I worked 16 hours.
Haha, Christmas is coming up!

What did you do this weekend?

November 29, 2012

Black Friday Bowling

While up in Colorado we went bowling. Yeah family bowling day. I never bowled really until I met Kevin. My family didn't ever all pile in the car to go bowling. I don't blame my family. I mean, the thought of putting our feet into shoes that 24790325 dirty people have warn and sticking our fingers into a ball with the same problem wasn't that appealing.

Oh and did I mention that the bowling alley in my hometown growing up was home to the biggest mass shooting my town has seen. Sadly, the murder of 7 people execution style 22 years ago has never been solved.

Wow what a debbie downer I sound like. But seriously. Kevin came around, took me bowling with friends and I had the occasional fun. So we went bowling with his family!

I have a major problem however when bowling.

My thumbs are really short and stout.

Therefore, when I have a ball, I have to get the heaviest one that I can carry and I end up getting my thumb stuck when I let go of the ball a lot.

Yeah I really shouldn't bowl. Thankfully the worst of my damage this trip was a broken thumb nail. UGH.

Here are the girls at the bowling alley!

Do you like bowling?

Thanksgiving Recap

I actually got time off work and Kevin and I drove to Colorado to surprise his grandpa on his 80th birthday! The whole family went to a restaurant. He was under the impression that he was going out to dinner with some friends...boy was he shocked to see all of us!

A toast to him! Happy Birthday!

Then the next day was family thanksgiving.
Man do I know how to eat and drink and do nothing.
The guys
The table

I need to get back in shape. Thankfully I have my first 5k in January to encourage me!!!

Then the next day we hung out as a family and went bowling. I have a whole post about bowling for tomorrow...

Then we drove back to NM, hung out with my family, and then drove back to Tucson. Since then...I have worked A LOT!

Yesterday was 16 hours. Better go shower now and get ready for work.

P.S. Happy Birthday to my amazing little sister Ellie (She is the one I need the Childhood Cancer Posts on) She is turning the big, bad, and not so little 17! She can always put a smile on your face and I love her to death!

Thankful Thanksgiving

I had such a great Thanksgiving that I will be reviewing it in a couple posts!
This first post is just about how truly thankful this Thanksgiving made me.

First Kevin and I hitched a ride with his parents up to Colorado and surprised his Grandpa for his 80th and stayed for Thanksgiving. We drove back on Saturday and spent Sunday with my family and then drove back to AZ. I will have more on all of that later.

This was my first Thanksgiving married. This meant that it was also my first Thanksgiving away from my family. All of my family lived in Ohio. Our Thanksgivings every year was just me, mom, dad, and the sisters. It was quiet, nice, and yummy.

This one was too (except my mom still has THE best stuffing...)

But like I said this Thanksgiving really gave me a lot to be thankful for. Here is what I am thankful for in no particular order.

1. My husband.
2. My family.
3. DVR--how did I survive before it...haha. I have lots to catch up on!
4. t shirts & sweat pants--Best outfits ever...especially when you eat a lot!
5. The holidays---definitely my favorite time of the year.
6. Denver Broncos--They are doing so well.
7. My new home--A new year will mean being in our home. We own it, we made it ours (with the awesome help of my parents). OURS!
8. My job--I am truly lucky to have a job.
9. Food and drink--enough said. This is the only time of the year when you stuff your face, no one looks at you like you are a fatty.
10. Blogging--thank you internet and thank you little blog. This is fun!
And always I am thankful for mine and my family and friends health and happiness.
From our home to yours, we hope you had a happy thanksgiving holiday!

I hugged Kevin a little tighter Thanksgiving morning...

Thanksgiving morning....early early early, my Husband's cousin lost her husband in an unexpected and tragic car accident.

We were all so hurt for her.

She is a year older than me, a newlywed like me, and so nice. I can't even begin to imagine what she is going through.

All I could do when I heard the news was tell Kevin to never die.

Everyone give your husband's (and kids) an extra big hug tonight. You never know what could happen...

Tuesday Topics: Describe Your Perfect Day

My perfect day. This is so hard!
haha who came up with this?! ;-)

I have had my wedding day which was pretty dang close to perfect!

One day I will get to doing a recap of my wedding.

But as for a future perfect day, I would hope to one day go to a Bronco's game with Kevin. That sounds pretty perfect.

Afterwards, a couple glasses of wine, a mani, pedi, and massage.
And basically, any day is perfect with Kevin, family, and friends is perfect.
Next week's topic is: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Have a great day everyone!

Stories from a Nurse

When I worked in the ER during my specialty semester in school, would have been the perfect time to have a blog. Those patients, those stories, would have seriously shamelessly given me some of my best material.

However a couple nights ago, I had one of those nights. That were just too crazy, but at the same time...funny.

First there were these three patients. All in their own room, two right next to each other and the other right across.

All three of these patients are kinda annoying. One of the men (who has dementia and even when his dementia is not showing through is a total jerk) starting moaning....really loud.

The girl right across the way (who had her gall bladder removed and is addicted to pain meds) yelled at the other patient to "shut the duck up." Okay she didn't say duck, but you get the gist.

Then the patient next to her said "both of you shut the duck up!" and then the original guy said "no you shut the duck up!"

Then they all proceeded to yell duck you, no you duck you, duck you....on repeat.

It sounded like a bad chant.

So my bad, I sat there and giggled. And then directed the patients to be quiet.

They proceeded to make my life a living hell the rest of the shift, but at least the chanting was done.

Then pain girl in an effort to really show me she was in pain, started moaning...right as I was about to leave.

This moaning instead of sounding like a moan of pain sounded like....
an orgasm.

No worries, one of my other patients--who thinks he is some sort of intellectual (yeah I promise I do not work in a psych ward) asked me if I read the book he was reading. Oh did I mention that the book was 50 Shades of Gray?

I said, no old dude, I have not read 50 Shades of Gray. He then proceeded to tell me that it was well written but that he prefers his pornography in a different matter. Sorry dude, if you are insinuating that I will sneak you in some Playboys, you are sorely mistaken.

Meanwhile, pain girl is still having her "pain" orgasms.

Oh a casual evening night as a nurse...

In-N-Out Secret Menu

I am about to share some secrets. I am hoping these secrets entice some of you amazing bloggers to come visit me in Arizona.

Ever heard of In-N-Out Burger?
Of course you have.

Well I am about to give away the best kept ordering secrets for In-N-Out Burger.

Here goes:

There four food items on the In-N-Out menu: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Double-Double and French Fries. You can also order a coke and/or three types of shakes: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.

But there is so much more than meets the eye. That is not the whole menu. There is a secret menu.

This is not something made up. These items will actually print out on your receipt.

The most known secret menu item is "Animal Style". This adds extra pickles, cheese, spread and grilled onions diced up and mixed together on the grill before getting dumped on your burger. (or fries if you wish) Most people also know that you can indeed order a grilled cheese. (Why?!?)
In-n-Out: Animal Style Fries
animal style fries

A “2×4″ is a burger with two beef patties and four slices of cheese. You can also order a “3×3,” a “4×2″, etc... I am not for sure on this, but I believe In-N-Out's policy has it as a 4×4 the largest you can get.

Low carbing it? Try either the Flying Dutchman (two beef patties and two pieces of cheese. nothing else) or Protein Style---my favorite (burger wrapped in lettuce instead of the bun).
In-n-Out: 2X4 Protein Style

You can also order cheese fries, your burger cut in half, extra any vegetable, extra sauce, and you can also order a Neapolitan!

Yep, can't decide on what shake to get? Common problem for me...order em all by saying you want a Neapolitan shake!

You can also do a root beer float or a choco-vanilla swirl.

This is what I know to be true. There could be more secret items, but if I don't know they exist for real, I won't share it. Nothing could possibly be more embarrassing than ordering something not on the menu.

Another nice thing about In-N-Out (that I am not positive is true, but won't hurt your ordering experience) is that they pay their employees better than min wage. Which is why you get such friendly, nice, and smarter people.

So who is on their way to AZ to visit me?!

Painting Brass and Taking Names!

**UPDATE 5/3/2015** 2.5 years later...they are still holding up well with all the wear and tear we put on these handles. No chips!!

So this new house I bought...there was a ton of brass EVERYWHERE. I was now faced with dated brass on the doors, bathroom faucets, toilet paper holder, towel rods, and shower enclosure! Problem was is that I didn't want to get rid of them and replace them all. I couldn't afford it. So I tried spray paining the door hardware. Boy does it look good! And cheap! And durable!

So instead of this:

I went to this:

I am also terrible at taking pictures to document. Hopefully I can get better. No my hinge did not magically turn into a knob.

We changed them to oil rubbed bronze. A dark oil rubbed bronze.
Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic Spray Paint, Oil-Rubbed Bronze

This costs 6-8 bucks depending on where you go. Let me break down the savings I got while being all DYI...

11 doors. Cost of cleansing the brass buying new: $550
11 doors cost of using spray paint: $15
Difference: $535 (I can buy myself a nice drink and much more with that!)

Yeah for that amount of money and for the ease. Totally worth it.

I took everything off the doors (or rather had Kevin take everything off)

Then I got gloves and used steel wool to scuff up the hardware. Just for a bit, you don't have to go at it for very long or super hard ;-)

Then rinse it off with soapy water and dry them.
Lay them out to paint.

Don't forget the nails!

Then place them over plastic and spray paint!

After a 6-8 hour drying time, they are ready to go back up on the doors.

During this process Kevin let me use a power tool. We were all very scared, but somehow everyone kept their fingers and nothing was ruined!
Thank the Lord!

Try it! You won't be sorry!
