Harry Potter and Lauren's Childhood

I am a Potter nerd all the way. I love Harry Potter. I started reading the books in elementary school, and I was instantly in love. I laughed, cursed, and cried during the series of the seven books.

And those who don't know I cried a lot as a middle schooler and since then haven't cried. I guess I got all cried out!

Anyway, back to it...Harry’s story is special to me. I grew up nearly at the same pace as the characters did, and the story became sort of woven into my own life. I learned from the books. I learned about friendship, family, loyalty, bravery, love, selflessness. The stories were complex and beautiful and there are truths that reach through you and touch your very soul.

These days, when I feel myself getting down or wishing for a simpler time, I pull out my old copies of the Harry Potter books. I have read them so many times I have lost count...each one in the double digits at least. Every time, I see the story and the characters in a slightly different way. It is also so comfortable to me like a security blanket. There’s a sense of peace in that familiarity. Somehow it makes me believe that I can put the world on hold for a while, that I really can escape. It’s like taking a vacation, except instead of going to an exotic location, you’re going back in time to when the words and the story were new to you. It’s a wonderful feeling, and I’m so glad that I can call on it at any time, just by opening a book.

I also love at anytime escaping and drawing on watching the movies. It isn't as complex and soothing as the books, but it does the trick in a pinch.

Are there words or books that touch you in that way?

  1. I read Harry Potter later in life (as in last year) and so wish I would have kept up with reading them as they came out because they really are a special story!
