Ingredient Substitutions

We have all been there, it is like the biggest kitchen nightmare...trying to scrounge up a decent meal and go through it all the way to find you are missing an ingredient?!?

No?! Well good going you super planner you!
For the rest of us poor souls that forget we don't have an ingredient (maybe like every meal almost) learn to adapt!

So to you I present my ingredient substitutions list!

Allspice, ground: ground cinnamon, dash ground nutmeg, or dash ground cloves

Cinnamon, ground: For 1 teaspoon, substitute 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg or ground allspice.

Chili powder: dash bottled hot pepper sauce plus a combination of dried oregano and ground cumin

Cloves, ground: ground allspice, ground cinnamon, or ground nutmeg

Cumin, ground: chili powder

Poultry seasoning: For 1 teaspoon, substitute 3/4 teaspoon dried sage plus a 1/4 teaspoon blend of any of these: dried thyme, dried marjoram, dried savory, ground black pepper, and dried rosemary.

Garlic salt: Garlic powder

Buttermilk: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar plus enough milk to equal one cup. Let that sit 5 minutes before using.

Brown Sugar: White sugar in equal amount. This will cause your cookies to be a little crispier. I have heard you can add two tablespoons of molasses for every cup of white sugar to fix this, but if you don't have brown sugar, how do you have molasses?!?

Soy Sauce: Four tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce mixed with one tablespoon of water equals 1/2 cup of Soy Sauce

Cream Cheese: Same oz ratio of Neufchatel or Riccota cheese.

Does anyone else have any other substitutions that they cannot live without?

  1. yogurt + a bit of milk also is a great substitution for buttermilk!

  2. I have been known to make up a lot of random, on the spot substitutions in my day--I definitely interpret recipes as very flexible. Just before we left the USA, I even made a loaf of white bread using water instead of milk in my favorite recipe. I think it was a little tastier with milk, but it still worked!
